Structure > Elements > Buckling Lengths

Definition of characteristic lengths (buckling lengths) for different buckling checks (in the context of steel design resistance calculation for steel and composite elements).

Note: The relevant buckling lengths can be separately defined for each result point, i.e. the start and end points of the beam elements. A definition in any intermediate subdivision points is not possible, design resistances can also only be calculated for start and end points of the elements.
SettingDescription
Table of characteristic lengths Per default all lengths are set to zero, i.e. the basic assumption is that beam buckling is not relevant for the design. Just for the check for local buckling the definition zero means that there is no lateral support of the slender parts (transverse stiffeners) in longitudinal direction.
SettingDescription
L-rx-beg resp. L-rx-end Relevant buckling length at element begin or element end for buckling around the local x axis (torsional-flexural buckling).
L-ry-beg resp. L-ry-end Relevant buckling length at element begin or element end for flexural buckling around the local y axis.
L-rz-beg resp. L-rz-end Relevant buckling length at element begin or element end for flexural buckling around the local z axis.
L-loc-beg resp. L-loc-end Relevant buckling length at element begin or element end for local buckling of slender cross-section parts (webs, flanges). Currently, separate values for the different slender parts cannot be defined.
L-lt-beg resp. L-lt-end Relevant buckling length at element begin or element end for lateral-torsional buckling of compression flanges. Currently it is not possible to define separate values for positive and negative moments, respectively for the case that more than one flange is in the compression zone.
